Livestock Preparedness for Evacuation

In the event of an emergency or natural disaster...

Do you know what to do? When to go? Where to go? What to take?

The Province of British Columbia has set out guidelines of how to respond to a disaster. The District of Metchosin and the Metchosin Fire Hall have been working on a Livestock Evacuation Plan which focuses on our community needs and resources.

First and Foremost, in the event of an emergency, if your house and surroundings are standing and safe please remain there as you will likely have more resources for yourself at home than would be available at the Emergency Reception Center. If you must relocate to the Emergency Center located at the new St. Mary's Church @ 4125 Metchosin Road, pets are welcome and some cages/carriers are available if you do not have your own.

Small animals such as chickens and rabbits are NOT considered livestock. In the event of an emergency, please set them free if they are in danger unless they are a pet and can then be brought to the Emergency Center.

We will be canvassing the community to get an idea of the #, type and location of livestock in the District. The existing POD system can be used to gather and share information so please be sure you are in contact with your POD leader/members. The POD system will be used in conjunction with the District's EOC website to share information to a wider audience.

The Fire Chief would like to identify and create a PRIVATE list of names and contact information for people with any resources that could be used in the event of an emergency. This information would only be shared with pertinent individuals in the event of an emergency and will not be made public. As part of this contact list we would like to identify food and containment opportunities as well as veterinary services/supplies within each POD. We will be looking for donations of unwanted items that can be used such as halters, lead ropes, food/water bowls, blankets, medical products, etc.
